Install & updates

Gistlist is a desktop app for macOS. Download the signed .dmg from the download page, drag the app to /Applications, and open it.

You don’t need to install anything else by hand. The Setup Wizard installs the bits your choices require: ffmpeg/ffprobe for media handling, an app-managed Python runtime and venv for Parakeet transcription (Apple Silicon only), Ollama for local models or semantic search, and macOS microphone and system-audio permissions.

A few things to know:

  • macOS 14.2 or later for system-audio capture. On older macOS, Gistlist records mic only.
  • An API key if you want Claude or OpenAI as your LLM provider. Optional — Ollama works fully offline.

Open Gistlist. The Setup Wizard walks you through seven steps the first time.

Gistlist checks for new releases in the background and shows a banner when one is ready. Nothing installs without your consent.

To change update behavior, open Settings → Other → Updates. You can:

  • Disable automatic update checks.
  • Skip the current release and wait for the next.
  • Install immediately from the banner.

Releases include a CHANGELOG.md describing what changed.

Drag Gistlist.app from /Applications to the Trash. Your meetings stay where they are — under ~/Documents/Gistlist (or whichever folder you picked) and ~/.gistlist/. Delete those manually if you want them gone too.
